Derry Township-Palmyra Borough-PennDOT - Chocolate Avenue (US 422) / Lingle Avenue Project
Project Description: The US Route 422 and Lingle Avenue Intersection project is the last part of a 3-part
series of projects to improve traffic congestion and safety and to stimulate economic development. This
series of projects was established during the Ridge Administration and they are partially funded with
Economic Development Funds.
The 1st project was the reconstruction and realignment of North Lingle Avenue from the Bridge over the
Norfolk Southern Railroad to the Intersection with PA Route 743. The 2nd project was the Hersheypark
Drive Extension, a new 4-lane divided highway, from the intersection of Hersheypark Drive and
Laudermilch Road (PA Route 743) to North Lingle Avenue.
The 3rd and current project in the group is US Route 422 and Lingle Avenue intersection improvement
project. This will involve the widening and reconstruction of the intersection. Turn lanes are being added
and the traffic signal is being interconnected with the signal at East Derry Road.
The primary purpose of the US Route 422 and Lingle Avenue project is to alleviate congestion and
improve safety at the intersection. The intersection will be widened to provide dedicated turn lanes in all
four (4) legs and to provide improved turning radii. The existing traffic
signal will be replaced and coordinated with the traffic signal at East Derry Road.
Project Cost and Funding: $ 2.6 million that will be funded by federal, state funds.
Project Schedule: Construction will begin in early 2010 and continue for approximately 14 months.
