Project Description: This project involves the replacement of the existing, structurally deficient bridge over the Swatara Creek. The location of the proposed structure will be placed upstream of the existing structure. Realignment of Hanover Street will be necessary to connect the new structure to Hersheypark Drive (SR 0039) at the existing intersection with North Hockersville Road (SR 2011) (See Map).
More specifically, the safety and travel improvements include:
- Construction of a bridge that contains two full-width 12-foot lanes, 2-foot shoulders and a sidewalk on the upstream side.
- The realignment of Hanover Street will “flatten” the existing 90-degree curve located near the Swatara Park entrance.
- The realignment of Hanover Street will create a four-way intersection with Hersheypark Drive and North Hockersville Road thus eliminating the existing offset intersection along Hersheypark Drive.
- The modifications to the intersection of Hanover Street, Hersheypark Drive and North Hockersville Road will include adjustments to the existing traffic signal.
- The existing portions of Hanover Street will be converted to private access road for use by adjacent property owners.
- The existing multi-span concrete arch bridge will be removed after the new bridge is constructed and open to traffic.
Project Cost and Funding: The construction cost of this area is $4.3 million that will be funded by a combination of Dauphin County Liquid Fuels funds and funds by Derry Township.
Project Schedule: Construction will begin in early 2010 and continue for approximately 12 months.
